Our artist has been working with different forms of glass for over 36 years. When she found dichroic glass her imagination went wild. She envisioned pendants, earrings, bracelets, gold wrapped dichroic glass jewelry of all shapes and sizes but mostly she saw turtles with shells that danced with color as they moved in the light. After much research and testing designs she has partnered with us to represent her one of a kind dichroic creations. We are excited to offer these custom dichroic pieces to the world. Each piece of dichroic glass jewelry that she creates has a multi dimensional effect. There is a lot of love in each handcrafted piece of wearable art and it will not go on the site unless she is fully satisfied with the piece. A minimum of four layers of glass in each creation and if you look closely you will see magical fairy dust hidden in each piece.
MORE ABOUT DICHROIC
The brilliant dichroic optical properties of dichroic glass are the result of multiple micro-layers of metal oxides. These thin layers of oxides have a total thickness of three to five millionths of an inch.
NASA developed dichroic glass for use in face shields in space suits. Multiple ultra-thin layers of different metals (gold, silver, titanium, chromium, aluminium, zirconium, magnesium, silicon) are applied to the surface of the glass. The glass is then kiln fired at extreme temperatures in a vacuum.
The resulting plate of dichroic glass can then be fused with other glass in multiple firings. Certain wavelengths of light will either pass through or be reflected, causing the array of colour that is visible in the image at right. Due to variations in the firing process, individual results can never be exactly reproduced; each piece of fused dichroic glass is unique and no two pieces are ever the same.
